Why Seawater Restoration Matters

The ocean is one of Earth’s most powerful climate allies, absorbing about a quarter of the carbon dioxide we emit each year. But as emissions rise, the ocean is reaching a breaking point. Coastal waters, rich in life and vital to local communities, are becoming more acidic, harming ecosystems and weakening the ocean’s natural ability to regulate the climate.

Planetary is working to fix this imbalance. We restore the chemistry of seawater so it can do what it has always done: support life and protect the planet.

How It Works

Planetary’s seawater restoration process uses ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE).

We introduce purified alkaline minerals into coastal outfalls at existing infrastructure sites, such as powerplants or wastewater treatment facilities. This boosts the water’s buffering capacity, allowing the water to convert more atmospheric carbon dioxide into stable bicarbonate.

The result of this process is permanent carbon removal, reduced ocean acidity, and stronger marine ecosystems.

Reforestation accelerates carbon dioxide removal on land.
Seawater restoration increases removals on our coasts.

Our Ocean Carbon Platform

We’ve designed an end-to-end system to ensure every project delivers on safety, impact, and integrity.

1

High-Purity Minerals

We recover and refine alkaline minerals from industrial byproducts using our patented process.

2

Infrastructure Integration

We dose minerals into water at facilities that are already managing coastal outflows— no overhaul needed.

3

Scientific Oversight

We partner with academic institutions and regulators to ensure safety and performance.

4

Third-Party Verification

We monitor outcomes and issue verifiable carbon removal credits backed by transparent data.

Our Code of Conduct

Planetary is committed to developing OAE that is ethical and sustainable by all metrics.

Our Code of Conduct was written to guide all our work, including our project development and our lab science. It applies to everyone who participates in this work with and on behalf of Planetary.

In every stage of our operations we strive to be:

Safe

We will follow the laws, rules, and guidelines in every region where we operate. In jurisdictions with weak regulatory requirements, we will conduct our operations in line with emerging best practices for deployment.

Impactful

We focus our science and operations on measurably and safely reducing atmospheric CO2. The environmental impact of our work is the primary measure of our success, and we prioritize it even in cases where it may not maximize profitability.

Science-Driven

We will collaborate with world-class scientific institutions and researchers to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of our methods in managing CO2. Our research will strive to be rigorous, responsible, and relevant and will take active steps to reduce research bias and increase accuracy, using third party verification when possible.

Engaged

We will proactively seek out dialogue with stakeholders, including local communities at each project site. We will address concerns and work with stakeholders to achieve shared success and address unforeseen issues.

Transparent

We will measure, verify, and share the results of our testing and the ongoing environmental impacts of our developments.
